    The multimode covering location problem

    In this paper we introduce the Multimode Covering Location Problem. This is a generalization of the Maximal Covering Location Problem that consists in locating a given number of facilities of different types with a limitation on the number of facilities sharing the same site. The problem is challenging and intrinsically much harder than its basic version. Nevertheless, it admits a constant factor approximation guarantee, which can be achieved combining two greedy algorithms. To improve the greedy solutions, we have developed a Variable Neighborhood Search approach, based on an exponential-size neighborhood. This algorithm computes good quality solutions in short computational time. The viability of the approach here proposed is also corroborated by a comparison with a Heuristic Concentration algorithm, which is presently the most effective approach to solve large instances of the Maximal Covering Location Problem

    A branch and bound approach for the design of decentralized supervisors in Petri net models

    The paper addresses the design of compact and maximally permissive decentralized supervisors for Petri nets, based on generalized mutual exclusion constraints. Decentralization constraints are formulated with respect to the net transitions, instructing each local supervisor to detect and disable transitions of its own control site only. A solution is characterized in terms of the states it allows and its feasibility is assessed by means of two separate tests, one checking the required behavioral properties (e.g., liveness, reversibility and controllability) of the induced reachability subgraph and the other ensuring the existence of a decentralized supervisor enforcing exactly the considered set of allowed states. The second test employs an integer linear programming formulation. Maximal permissivity is ensured by efficiently exploring the solution space using a branch and bound method that operates on the reachable states. Particular emphasis is posed on the obtainment of the controllability property, both in the structural and the behavioral interpretation

    Optimal selection of contracts and work shifts in multi-skill call centers

    This paper deals with the problem of finding the most suitable contracts to be used when hiring the operators of a call center and deciding their optimal working schedule, to optimize the trade-off between the service level provided to the customers and the cost of the personnel. In a previous paper (Cordone et al. 2011), we proposed a heuristic method to quickly build an integer solution from the solution of the continuous relaxation of an integer linear programming model. In this paper, we generalize that model to take into account a much wider class of working contracts, allowing heterogeneous shift patterns, as well as legal constraints related to continuously active working environments. Since our original rounding heuristic cannot be extended to the new model, due to its huge size and to the involved correlations between different sets of integer variables, we introduce a more sophisticated heuristic based on decomposition and on a multi-level iterative structure. We compare the results of this heuristic with those of a Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure, both on real-world instances and on realistic random instances

    The Food Web of Potter Cove (Antarctica): complexity, structure and function

    Knowledge of the food web structure and complexity are central to better understand ecosystem functioning. A food-web approach includes both species and energy flows among them, providing a natural framework for characterizing species’ ecological roles and the mechanisms through which biodiversity influences ecosystem dynamics. Here we present for the first time a high-resolution food web for a marine ecosystem at Potter Cove (northern Antarctic Peninsula). Eleven food web properties were analyzed in order to document network complexity, structure and topology. We found a low linkage density (3.4), connectance (0.04) and omnivory percentage (45), as well as a short path length (1.8) and a low clustering coefficient (0.08). Furthermore, relating the structure of the food web to its dynamics, an exponential degree distribution (in- and out-links) was found. This suggests that the Potter Cove food web may be vulnerable if the most connected species became locally extinct. For two of the three more connected functional groups, competition overlap graphs imply high trophic interaction between demersal fish and niche specialization according to feeding strategies in amphipods. On the other hand, the prey overlap graph shows also that multiple energy pathways of carbon flux exist across benthic and pelagic habitats in the Potter Cove ecosystem. Although alternative food sources might add robustness to the web, network properties (low linkage density, connectance and omnivory) suggest fragility and potential trophic cascade effects.Fil: Marina, Tomas Ignacio.     Role of galectin-3 as a receptor for advanced glycosylation end products

    Role of galectin-3 as a receptor for advanced glycosylation end products. The advanced glycosylation end product (AGE)-binding proteins identified so far include the components of the AGE-receptor complex p60, p90 and galectin-3, receptor for advanced glycosylation end products (RAGE), and the macrophage scavenger receptor types I and II. Galectin-3 interacts with β-galactoside residues of several cell surface and matrix glycoproteins through the carbohydrate recognition domain and is also capable of peptide–peptide associations mediated by its N-terminus domain. These structural properties enable galectin-3 to exert multiple functions, including the modulation of cell adhesion, the control of cell cycle, and the mRNA splicing activity. Moreover, in macrophages, astrocytes, and endothelial cells, galectin-3 has been shown to exhibit a high-affinity binding for AGEs; the lack of a transmembrane anchor sequence or signal peptide suggests that it associates with other AGE-receptor components rather than playing an independent role as AGE-receptor. In tissues that are targets of diabetic vascular complications, such as the mesangium and the endothelium, galectin-3 is not expressed or only weakly expressed under basal conditions, at variance with p90 and p60 but becomes detectable with aging and is induced or up-regulated by the diabetic milieu, which only slightly affects the expression of p90 or p60. This (over)expression of galectin-3 may in turn modulate AGE-receptor-mediated events by modifying the function of the AGE-receptor complex, which could play a role in the pathogenesis of target tissue injury. Up-regulated galectin-3 expression may also exert direct effects on tissue remodeling, independently of AGE ligands, by virtue of its adhesive and growth regulating properties

    A Heuristic for the Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows

    Editor: Abstract. In this paper we propose a heuristic algorithm to solve theVehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows. Its framework is a smart combination of three simple procedures: the classical k-opt exchanges improve the solution, an ad hoc procedure reduces the number of vehicles and a second objective function drives the search out of local optima. No parameter tuning is required and no random choice is made: these are the distinguishing features with respect to the recent literature. The algorithm has been tested on benchmark problems which prove ittobe more e ective than comparable algorithms
